As a responsible corporate citizen interested in the development
of the people in the communities within which it operates, Toyota
Ghana has refurbished the Tarkwa Library and donated Children’s
books to them as part of activities planned to mark its 10th Anniversary.
The total project cost about GH¢14,000.
In his address, the MD of Toyota Ghana, Mr. Masato Kimata, said
Toyota believes that the development of children is critical to
national prosperity and growth, hence the Library as the project
of choice. He intimated that to instill a reading-culture in the
patrons of the Library, the Company has instituted an annual scheme
to reward three most disciplined users of the Library most. They
will be given a scholarship of GH¢500 each to facilitate
their education for the year.
Unveiling the plaque, the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. George
M. Duker, urged other companies operating in the Tarkwa community
to emulate Toyota Ghana’s gesture to facilitate the rapid
development of the Municipality. He appealed to the Ghana Library
Board to evolve a pragmatic maintenance culture to prolong the
lifespan of the Library edifice and the books. He further asked
the general public to register with the Library to cultivate the
habit of reading. That way, the current problem of graduates who
are unable to read and write good English will be addressed.
The Western Regional Director of the Ghana Library Board, Mr.
Joseph Boye, who delivered the welcome address reiterated the
indispensable role of Libraries in education. He stated that Toyota
Ghana deserves a pat on the shoulders for not just refurbishing
the Library but equipping it as well. This is because, according
to him, organizations put up Libraries and fail to equip it with
the requisite books, thus, rendering them “white elephant”.
He promised to ensure that the project will be well maintained
